Scott’s Cycles was started in 1914 by Harry W. Scott. Mr. Scott owned the business until 1965 when he sold it to the shops current owner. Mr. Scott was very influential in the city of Salem. He was known by many as “The Cycle Man”. Scott’s Cycles used to be more than a bicycle shop. Scott’s carried lawnmowers, motorcycles, and bicycles. Unfortunately six months after Mr. Scott sold the business he passed away. In the 1970’s the bike business saw the “Bike Boom”. Scott’s was right there leading the way selling everybody in town Schwinn bicycles. Unfortunately in the winter of 1991 the neighboring restaurant’s grill caught on fire and burned Scott’s Cycles historic building to the ground. Two days later Scott’s reopened one block up the street. It was the help of loyal customers helping them move that made the move and reopening much easier on the owners. Scott’s was the leader during the mountain bike craze in the 90’s offering the best bicycles available. In the 2000’s road bicycle are the popular bike and Scott’s carries a wide variety of the highest quality of road bikes. In the summer of 2006 Scott’s had one more fire scare when neighboring McMahan’s Furniture caught on fire.
